Hey Smiley

have questions about US customs and food. I can bring pinnekjøtt in to the USA from Norway. Want so much to bring this with me to my family. We want to suprise them and make a great big family dinner with both the norwegian side and american side of the family. The pages I've read about Customs's and food are a bit in an gray area when it comes to packaged food.

Can anyone help me?

Hello Jeantte!

Welcome to the forum!!  Smiley

I have earlier checked this out with both Gilde and Nordfjordkjøtt. They both agree on that it is almost impossible to bring meat in to the USA due to the US customs. I would, however, recommend you to get in contact with the Norwegian embassy in ie Washington DC. This is their website:

http://www.norway.org/Embassy/washington/

We here at the forum would really appreciate if you shared with us the answer you will get from the embassy. I am sure there are plenty of users on The Norskland Forum with the same kind of question.

Regards

Although this happened in 1995, I had gotten a roll of sausage in Norway and it was taken from me at customs in Minneapolis as it was "processed" right.  It looked as processed as any sausage I've seen over here.  Good luck to you.

No meat is allowed to be brought into the country from Norway.  My dad has sent us pinnekjøtt, and customs has opened it and tossed it, along with vacuum packed sandwich meat.  We are so sad now that we have to buy it here, definitely not as good as the Norwegian.   We have been told that we can't even send jerky to Norway.  The only perishable food item we can bring or send is cheese,  if it is still sealed or vacuum packed.  They got really strict after all of the mad cow disease.   If they have changed any of their policies, please let us know, I would love to get some Norwegian pinnekjøtt again.  Smiley
